Small game hunting in Spain

Small game hunting: information about some suitable ways to practice this discipline in Spain.

As we already know, small game hunting is a sport in which is not allowed to hunt animals bigger than a fox. In this kind of hunt, we can shoot smaller animals as partridges, turtledoves, pheasants, hares, rabbits….

When a group of hunters practice small game hunting, they are usually accompanied by dogs, as they can help them to track their prey. Due to the small size of the animals mentioned above, it can sometimes be a difficult task to find them.

Different types of small game hunting

Small game hunting has a wide range of modalities through which hunters can develop different styles. Let’s review the main types of small game:

“At the pace”: under this modality, hunters decide which species they want to hunt and hide in a passageway.

“Waiting or stalking”: in this modality, the hunter hides among the foliage of a river while waiting for birds or ducks to appear seeking food or for migratory reasons.

“At a glance”: hunters send their dogs to scare the prey, while they wait hidden in the area where the animals will escape through.

“With decoy”: hunters place a partridge locked in a cage, in order to attract both males and females of the same species during the mating season.

But these are not the only existing modalities. There are also other ways to practice small game hunting, as “dog jump hunt” or small game “In hand”.
