Main differences between big and small game

El Crespo is a place where hunters can practise their favourite sport: hunt. Nevertheless, we are specialized in small game hunting instead of the big game. So, what’s the difference between big and small game? Let’s analyze the main differences between both of them, since, unless you are an experienced hunter, it is possible to mix up some of their characteristics.

How to distinguish between big and small game

Let’s see the main differences between big and small game: prey types, game preserve sizes, etc.

Basically, the main difference between big and small game is the size of the animals that we are going to hunt. Big game hunting is defined as the type of hunting that allows shooting animals larger than a common fox. Meanwhile, small game hunters can only shoot animals which are smaller than a fox.

In this way, the different prey can be classified according to whether they belong to one type of game or the other. Let’s see some of them:

Big game: wild boar, Iberian deer, row deer, Spanish goat, etc.

Small game: rabbit, hare, pheasant, quail, pigeon and, of course, the red-legged partridge.

Obviously, there are many more types of prey, as there is a great variety of animals that can be part of these two types of hunting. However, in our case we focus on the most typical prey in Spain, as El Crespo is located in Ciudad Real.

In addition to the size of the prey, there is a key difference between big game and small game: the game preserve. The minimum area in the case of small game is 250 hectares. In the case of big game, the minimum area is 500 hectares.
